Winch Accessories

A winch by itself is not a complete recovery system. Carry gloves, a rated tree saver, suitable hard or soft shackles, a winch damper, and a correctly rated snatch block or recovery ring. A winch extension strap adds reach when an anchor is beyond the installed rope length. If the vehicle uses synthetic rope, keep the hawse fairlead smooth and free of burrs; steel cable should use a suitable roller fairlead. A wireless remote can improve visibility by allowing the operator to stand where the vehicle, anchor, and rope path can be seen, but the wired control should remain available as backup. Every accessory should be matched to the winch and vehicle, and the recovery points themselves must be properly rated.

Both can redirect a winch line or create a double-line pull, but they work differently. A snatch block uses a rotating sheave and can be suitable for steel cable or synthetic rope when designed for the line type. A low-friction recovery ring is designed primarily for synthetic rope and is normally connected with a soft shackle. Rings are compact and have no bearings to maintain, while a quality pulley block can offer very low rolling resistance and remains useful when steel cable is involved. Choose the device from the winch line, recovery geometry, and required rating. The block or ring does not increase the rating of the tree saver, shackle, receiver, or vehicle recovery point it is connected to.

Wrapping winch rope or cable directly around a tree can damage the bark, concentrate force on a small area, and damage the winch line itself. A wide tree saver spreads the load and creates a controlled anchor point for a shackle, pulley, or recovery ring. Choose a healthy tree of suitable size and position the strap low around the trunk where practical. Avoid sharp bark, broken branches, or rocks that can cut the strap. A tree saver is a static recovery anchor, not automatically a towing or lifting sling. If the anchor looks questionable, reduce the recovery load with digging, tire pressure adjustment, or a different rigging plan rather than simply adding more winch force.

Synthetic rope has far less mass than steel cable, but a loaded recovery system still stores energy and can contain heavy connectors. A damper remains a sensible extra precaution, especially when steel shackles, hooks, or pulley hardware are in the line. More important than the damper is keeping people completely out of the winch line and probable recoil area. Nobody should straddle, step over, or stand beside a heavily loaded rope. A damper is not a substitute for rated recovery points, correct rigging, good line condition, and an exclusion zone. With steel cable, using a damper becomes even more important because the cable itself has substantial mass and can recoil dangerously if it breaks.

Match the remote kit to the exact winch control system and voltage. Sherpa uses different controls across 4x4, ATV, boat, and commercial winches, so a wireless kit that looks similar may use different plugs or switching logic. Some kits connect directly to the existing control socket, while others include a receiver that interfaces with the contactor or control box. Confirm the winch model and compare the existing remote plug before ordering. After installation, test both IN and OUT directions with no load and confirm the wired remote still works. Wireless control improves operator position, but it should not be the only way to stop or control the winch.
