Hand Winches

Hand winches are useful where controlled pulling is needed without depending on a vehicle battery or electric motor. Common uses include boat trailers, farm equipment, workshop positioning, davits, adjustable equipment, and other low-speed pulling tasks. Sherpa offers heavy-duty and stainless-steel hand winches, so the best model depends on capacity, environment, rope or strap length, and whether corrosion resistance is important. Do not assume a hand winch intended for horizontal pulling is automatically approved for lifting. If the load will be raised, lowered, or suspended, confirm the specific model and brake design are suitable for that duty.

A braked hand winch provides controlled movement and holds the load when the operator stops turning the handle. This is particularly useful when lowering a boat, keel, or other load where a basic ratchet winch could release too quickly. The brake is a safety-critical part of the winch and should not be lubricated or modified in a way that reduces friction. A brake also does not mean the load can be left suspended indefinitely without any secondary restraint where the application requires one. Stay within the winch rating and make sure the mounting structure, cable or strap, sheaves, and attachment points are equally suitable.

Stainless construction is especially valuable around salt water, docks, boat trailers, and outdoor installations where corrosion is a recurring problem. It reduces maintenance compared with painted carbon steel, but it is not completely maintenance-free. Salt deposits, crevices, and dissimilar-metal fasteners can still cause corrosion over time. Rinse the winch with fresh water after marine use, allow it to dry, and inspect the drum, gears, brake components, handle, and mounting bolts. In a dry shop or farm setting, a heavy-duty non-stainless model may provide the required capacity at lower cost.

A load-pressure brake is designed to keep control of the drum when the handle is released. Allowing unrestricted free-spool would defeat that safety function, so some braked winches require the handle to be turned to pay line out as well as bring it in. This behavior is deliberate and should be considered before replacing a simple boat-trailer ratchet winch with a braked model. If rapid free-spooling is essential to the application, select a winch designed to provide that function safely rather than disabling the brake.

Inspect the cable or strap, drum, gears, brake, handle, bearings, and mounting hardware before heavy use. Keep dirt and salt out of the gear train and lubricate only the points specified by the manufacturer; oil or grease on brake friction surfaces can cause the load to slip. Make sure cable or webbing spools evenly and does not wedge against a drum flange. Replace frayed strap, broken wire rope, damaged hooks, and bent handles. Marine winches should be rinsed after salt exposure. If the handle becomes unusually difficult to turn, the brake slips, or the gear teeth jump under load, stop using the winch until the fault is identified.
