SW12V20LB28SR
Designed specifically for loading equipment, machinery and vehicles on and off trailers and trucks, these hoist-style winches combine powerful performance with advanced braking and control features for reliable, demanding applications.
Sherpa 4x4 has been designing and building winches for many years, continually refining its products based on real-world experience and customer feedback. One request we heard consistently was for a powerful, reliable and simple-to-operate winch capable of loading containers, machinery, vehicles and equipment onto flatbed trucks, tilt trays and custom trailers with ease.
The result is the Sherpa 4x4 Tow Truck Winch — a heavy-duty winch purpose-built for demanding vehicle recovery, transport and equipment-loading applications.
VEHICLE’S ENGINE MUST BE RUNNING DURING WINCH OPERATION -The winch CAN NOT be connected to a stand-alone battery not being charged by the vehicle alternator. Doing so will damage the winch, voiding the warranty.
Large Frame & Oversized Drum
The Sherpa Tow Truck Winch features a substantial frame and oversized drum designed to provide exceptional strength and improved rope management.
The larger drum gives the operator more room for the rope or cable to lay naturally during operation, helping reduce the risk of uneven loading and over-spooling. This makes repeated winching faster and easier, allowing the operator to concentrate on controlling the load rather than constantly managing the winch line.
Hoist-Style Fail-Safe Braking System
One of the key differences between the Sherpa Tow Truck Winch and a conventional 4x4 recovery winch is its hoist-style braking system.
The brake is incorporated into the motor and uses mechanical spring force to automatically apply the brake when electrical power is removed. When the winch is operated, the brake is electrically released.
This fail-safe design is particularly important when controlling or lowering heavy loads. Conventional 4x4 winch braking systems are generally designed primarily for vehicle recovery and can experience excessive wear or damage when repeatedly used to lower loads.
By incorporating the brake on the input side of the motor, the Sherpa Tow Truck Winch provides powerful load-holding capability and greater control during demanding loading and unloading applications.
Genuine Albright International Contactor
As with Sherpa's premium winch range, the Tow Truck Winch is supplied with a genuine Albright International contactor pack.
Albright contactors are renowned for their reliability and durability in demanding electrical switching applications. The sealed contactor assembly provides excellent protection from the elements and helps ensure dependable operation when the winch is needed.
12V & 24V Options
The Sherpa Tow Truck Winch can be configured to suit different vehicles and equipment, with both 12V and 24V motor and control options available.
Each winch is supplied with your choice of:
28 metres of synthetic winch rope, or
28 metres of steel winch cable
An optional wireless remote control kit is also available for operators wanting greater freedom when positioning themselves around the vehicle or load.
Built for Outdoor Installations
The Sherpa Tow Truck Winch carries an IP66 rating, making it suitable for outdoor installations where it may be exposed to rain, dust and harsh operating environments.
However, this model is not recommended for applications where the winch may be submerged in water. Water ingress may adversely affect the performance of the electric braking system.
For applications involving regular water crossings or potential submersion, contact Sherpa 4x4 for advice on the most appropriate winch solution.
Important Hoisting Warning
Although the Sherpa Tow Truck Winch incorporates a hoist-style braking system, it is not certified or recommended for overhead lifting or suspended-load hoisting applications.
The winch uses a single braking system without braking redundancy and may not comply with applicable hoisting or lifting equipment standards.
Never position yourself or another person beneath or in the path of a suspended or tensioned load. Operators should always allow for the possibility of equipment failure, brake failure or unexpected load movement and use appropriate secondary restraints and safe operating procedures.
Designed for Serious Loading Applications
Whether you're operating a tilt tray, flatbed truck, machinery trailer or custom transport setup, the Sherpa Tow Truck Winch delivers the strength, braking control and rope capacity required for serious loading work.
Built around customer feedback and backed by Sherpa 4x4's experience in winching equipment, it's a purpose-designed solution for operators who need dependable pulling power day after day.
Important Notice: Winch rope or cable must be correctly tensioned and wound onto the drum under load before use. Refer to the Winch Cable/Rope section of the owner's manual for the correct first-use and tensioning procedure.
Sherpa 4x4 winches are engineered for serious recovery work. Built from quality components and developed through years of experience in winching and lifting equipment, they are designed to deliver reliable pulling power in harsh Australian and off-road conditions.
Tried & Tested
Sherpa 4x4 winches have been developed through years of practical experience, testing and continuous improvement. From muddy rainforest recoveries to remote outback conditions, Sherpa winches are built to perform when reliability matters most.
Tough & Durable Construction
The Sherpa 4x4 Brumby is designed to withstand demanding environments. Quality materials, including 316 stainless steel fittings where specified, provide excellent resistance to corrosion, mud, water and harsh operating conditions.
Braking Design
Beware of cheap imitations! Many winches on the market use the old cable winch ‘Brake in drum’ design which causes heat to build up in the winch damaging synthetic rope. ‘Brake in Drum’ winches were never intended for use with synthetic ropes and this will become obvious at the most inconvenient time. Sherpa winches are compatible with all types of synthetic rope. The innovative design results in a trouble and heat free winch and braking combination.
Gearbox-Mounted Braking System
Unlike many winches that locate the brake inside the drum, Sherpa 4x4 uses a braking system incorporated into the gearbox. This helps minimise heat build-up within the drum, making the design particularly well suited to synthetic winch rope and reducing unnecessary heat exposure during operation.
Quality CNC-Cut Gearing
Sherpa 4x4 specifies high-quality CNC-machined gears manufactured from billet steel rather than relying on lower-cost sintered gear construction. This produces a strong, durable drivetrain designed to handle the high loads associated with serious recovery work.
Premium Electrical Components
Sherpa 4x4 winches are equipped with heavy-duty, fully sealed genuine Albright International contactors. As the electrical switching system is a critical part of any winch, Sherpa uses proven components designed for dependable operation in demanding conditions.
IP68 Rated Protection
Sherpa 4x4 winches are IP68 rated, helping protect critical components against dust, water and mud ingress when operating in harsh off-road environments.
Powerful Series-Wound Motors
Sherpa winches use high-performance series-wound motors designed to deliver strong pulling power and withstand demanding recovery conditions. High copper content within the motor windings, combined with a robust frame and gearbox design, provides dependable performance under load.
Serious Pulling Power
Sherpa 4x4 winches are designed for users who want greater recovery capacity and performance in reserve. When conditions become difficult and loads increase, having additional winching capacity can make a significant difference.
Straightforward Installation
Sherpa 4x4 winches use common industry mounting patterns and are designed to suit many popular winch-compatible bull bars and mounting systems. Installation hardware and components are supplied to make fitting as straightforward as possible for professional installers and capable home mechanics.
Always confirm the available mounting space, bolt pattern and winch dimensions before installation. Detailed dimensions and diagrams are available on our website.
Hawse or Roller Fairlead Options
Depending on the configuration selected, the Brumby can be supplied with an aluminium hawse fairlead for synthetic rope or a roller fairlead for steel cable. These help guide the winch line and reduce abrasion, particularly during angled recoveries. Offset aluminium hawse fairleads may also be available for selected installations.
Warranty & Spare Parts Support
Sherpa 4x4 Brumby winches are backed by a 5 Year Warranty, giving you confidence in your investment. A comprehensive and affordable range of replacement and service parts is also available to help keep your winch operating for years to come.
A winch is equipment you depend on when things have already gone wrong. Sherpa 4x4 focuses on quality motors, gearing, electrical components, sealing and braking systems to produce winches that are ready for demanding recovery situations.
Important: Winch rope or cable must be correctly tensioned and wound onto the drum under load before use. Refer to the Winch Cable/Rope section of the owner's manual for the correct installation, first-use and tensioning procedure.

All Sherpa 4x4 winches come with genuine Albright solenoids! Incorporated into the electrics is a custom made version of the DC88P solenoid designed specifically by Albright International for the Sherpa 4x4 control boxes. With 70 years experienced in contactor design, these are by far the best winch solenoids available. Capable of handling up to 800 amps, almost twice the maximum capacity of the winch. Contact plating is second to none, increasing the duty cycle over other winches. As seen in our water submersion testing videos the Albright solenoids can be run for significant time under water without moisture ingress. The cheap Chinese solenoids used in the majority of winches will fail under extreme conditions and under high amperage load.
